Searching for Syria

Google · Digital Experience · 2017

A crisis is more than its worst images.

When a crisis dominates the headlines, more information doesn't always mean more understanding.

Searching for Syria used Google and UNHCR data to answer the questions millions of people were already asking.
Creating a more human way to understand the Syrian crisis.

Syria’s the visual story was overwhelmingly one of destruction.

We pushed for a broader picture: real people, everyday life and the country beyond the conflict. Shaping the photography and art direction throughout the experience.

Understanding had to lead somewhere.

The experience wasn't designed simply to demonstrate what Google's tools could do.
We pushed for it to give people a way to act, connecting the story directly to support for UNHCR.
